My internet speed is slow/laggy/unstable

My internet connection is weak / slow. What can I do about it?

I see a blue spin on my virtual room screen and an error message that says my internet connection is unstable. What can I do about it?

If your internet speed is slower than what is recommended, and you have already tried to reload your browser but it did not help much, you can try the following steps to get a more stable internet connection.

Network Recommendations

Reconnect to the Network

Switch off your device's WIFI or mobile data, then switch it on again to reconnect. 

If you are using mobile data, also try switching Airplane mode on and off to reconnect to the cellular network.

Reduce Distance to Your Router / Move to a Place With Better Signal

If you are using WIFI, try to move closer to the WIFI router or move it closer to you. Avoid putting obstacles/ blockages such as walls or closed doors between your device and your router, and try to place the router in an open area of your home.

If you are using mobile 4G, try moving to a place with better signal and avoid being underground.

Switch to a Different Network

Check the WIFI networks available and connect to the one with the strongest signal. If you have a dual-band router, use the 5GHz network instead of 2.4GHz.

If you are currently using a WIFI network with a weak connection, such as public WIFI at a cafe/shopping mall/public library, you can also try switching to mobile 4G. In general, we do not recommend connecting to public WIFI as it is usually not fast nor stable enough to support a smooth online collaboration session.

Restart Your Device

Restart your device if your internet connection seems worse than usual.

Switch Off Other Wireless Connections

Switch off other wireless services such as WIFI (if you are using mobile 4G), mobile data (if you are using WIFI), Bluetooth and Near-Field Communication (NFC) on your device.

Troubleshoot Connectivity Issues on Your Device

Use your device's pre-existing troubleshooter to troubleshoot potential problems with your device's network.

On Windows, click on the Windows search bar and search "Troubleshoot network". Open Find and fix network problems and follow the instructions given.

On Mac, choose Apple menu -> System Preferences and click Network. Click Assist me, and then click Diagnostics and follow the instructions given.

Use an Ethernet Connection

If your computer has a port for Ethernet cables, consider using an Ethernet connection instead of (or together with) WIFI as Ethernet connections are generally much more stable and faster than wireless connections.

It is also possible to buy Ethernet adaptors if your computer does not have an Ethernet cable port.

Check Your Router

Poor WIFI connection can be due to issues with your router. Restart your router by unplugging it, waiting 30 seconds before plugging it back in.

Also make sure to check that your router is not overheated. If it is hot enough to burn on touch, you may want to switch it off at fixed periods of time to let it cool off, increase ventilation around the router, or replace it.

Replace Your Router

If it has been 4-5 years since you replaced your router, or:

  • your router gets very hot very quickly, but this has only started happening recently
  • your internet speed is still slow even when there are no problems with the connection

Your router may be too old and you might want to look into replacing your router with a newer model.

Improve Coverage of your Router

You may want to look into enhancing the coverage of your router. You can do so by adding a WIFI range extender, network extender or repeater (devices that improve WIFI coverage in different parts of your home). 

For the best WIFI coverage throughout your home, you can replace your router with a mesh WIFI system such as Google WIFI.
